ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Valerie Khoo is an award winning journalist who contributes to The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. She is director of the Sydney Writers’ Centre and has contributed to a wide range of corporate and consumer publications in Australia and South-East Asia.

With a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney and a Graduate Diploma in Communication from the University of Technology, Sydney, Valerie is author of four books and has edited Australia’s Nobel Laureates: Adventures in Innovation (ETNCOM 2004). She was also editor of Waterfront Spectacular – the Story of Melbourne Docklands (ETNCOM 2005), produced in conjunction with VicUrban.

A former accountant at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in both Sydney and London, Valerie was also associate lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Sydney. Following postgraduate studies in journalism and public relations, she worked in strategic communications and issues management in public relations consultancies.

Valerie’s career in publishing has included working at ACP Magazines, Pacific Magazines and EMAP. During her four years contracting to NSW Department of Education and Training’s corporate communications unit, she was awarded the 2002 Media Award for Education Journalism for her series of articles on public education. Currently, Valerie edits Private Word, the magazine of the National Australia Bank’s (NAB) Private Bank and Business View for NAB’s business customers. She presents seminars in corporate communication at the University of Sydney’s Centre for Continuing Education.

Valerie’s has held a long interest in corporate responsibility and its role in corporate strategy, triple bottom line accounting and shareholder relations. She is also a committed social entrepreneur having co-founded social cause fashion and accessories label, Taylor & Khoo – which aims to assist orphans and people with disabilities in poverty in Cambodia. The project has been recognised by the Australian Humanitarian Awards 2005 (business category), the Australia Post Small Business Awards 2005 (Special Judges Commendation Award) and Anthill Magazines 10 Coolest Companies in Australia 2006. She was presented with the UTS Alumni Leadership Award in 2006.
